Greenville Center for Creative Arts is designated as Walt's Waltz's first Stigma-Free Zone in South Carolina

  • Greenville Center for Creative Arts 101 Abney Street Greenville, SC, 29611 United States (map)

Join Walt’s Waltz as we celebrate Greenville Center for Creative Arts’ designation as Walt’s Waltz’s first Stigma-Free Zone in South Carolina.

Be part of the solution through participation in our Community Art Project. We need your handwritten words of hope, empowerment, and compassion, but we also ask you to write an adjective that describes the feeling you experience when faced with mental health stigma. These words will be burned into this piece as a reminder that speaking out reduces shame. Let's create a collective voice that reminds everyone that mental health is a human experience.

Nick Burns' portrait, Walt, will be on display. This larger than life 8 ft. x 8 ft. portrait of Walt is an emotive piece that displays the magnitude of loss experienced with a death from anxiety and depression.

Glenis Redmond will be on screen reciting a number of her poems illuminating struggle and hope.

During the evening hours, there will be live music featuring Lana Guy from 5:30 - 7:30. Lana will preform a variety of original songs including “Samantha” for Suicide Awareness Month and her own arrangement of a song originally written by Walt and Susan Crooks. It’s titled, “The Waltz”.

Recitation of the Stigma-Free Pledge and awards presentation will begin at 6:30.

*First Friday at GCCA will take place on Nov. 6 with expanded hours from 1:00-8:00 p.m. Admission is free, but all visitors must register in advance on EventBrite for a one-hour time slot. For safety, masks are required and capacity is limited to ensure social distancing.
